The Burnout You Can't See Coming
(Until You're In It)
If you're the person everyone counts on - the one who shows up early, delivers on time, and has it together even when things fall apart around you - burnout doesn't usually show up as a dramatic breakdown. It shows up quietly. You keep functioning. You keep checking things off the list. And somewhere along the way, you stop feeling like yourself.
This is one of the things I hear most often in my practice: "I don't know what's wrong. Nothing bad has happened. I'm just... not okay." That's burnout, and it's more common than most people realize, especially among high-achieving, high-functioning people who've built their identity around being capable.
Here's what it can actually look like
Physical signs
Burnout lives in the body before it makes it to your conscious awareness. Common signs include:
Exhaustion that doesn't improve with sleep or a weekend off
Frequent headaches, muscle tension, or stomach issues with no clear medical cause
Getting sick more often, as your immune system takes the hit
Changes in appetite or sleep - either sleeping too much or lying awake wired and tired at the same time
If you've had this checked out medically and everything comes back "normal," that doesn't mean nothing's wrong. It might mean your body is carrying stress your mind hasn't caught up to yet.
Emotional signs
A flatness or numbness where you used to feel engaged or excited
Irritability that feels out of proportion - snapping at your kids, your partner, or a slow driver in front of you
A creeping sense of dread about work, or about the day in general
Feeling detached from things you used to care about, including relationships
A quiet, persistent thought like "what's the point" or "I can't keep doing this," even if you can't name why
Cognitive signs
Trouble concentrating or making decisions that used to be easy
Forgetfulness - walking into a room and losing the thread of why
A foggy, sluggish feeling, like you're operating at 60% even on your best days
Cynicism creeping into how you see your job, your role, or people in general
Behavioral signs
Procrastinating on things you'd normally handle without a second thought
Withdrawing from coworkers, friends, or family
Using food, alcohol, scrolling, or overworking to numb out rather than recharge
Producing work that technically gets done but doesn't reflect your usual standard
Why high-functioning people miss it
If you've spent years being the reliable one, you've likely gotten very good at pushing through. That skill served you for a long time. But it also means you can miss the early warning signs, because you're used to overriding them. By the time burnout is undeniable, it's often been building for months, sometimes longer.
There's also a mismatch between what burnout looks like on the outside and how it feels on the inside. From the outside, you're still performing- still showing up, still "fine." On the inside, you might feel like you're running on fumes, disconnected from your own life, or wondering how much longer you can keep this up.
What actually helps
Burnout isn't fixed by a spa day or a better to-do list, though rest matters. It usually points to something underneath - unsustainable expectations, a values mismatch, unprocessed stress, or a life that's stopped leaving room for you in it. Real recovery tends to involve:
Getting honest about what's unsustainable, not just pushing through it
Rebuilding boundaries around your time and energy
Reconnecting with what actually matters to you, separate from what you're supposed to want
Having support - someone who can help you slow down enough to hear yourself think
If any of this sounds familiar, you're not broken, and you're not alone in this. Burnout is common and often the first honest signal that something in your life needs to shift - not that something is wrong with you.
